How we work

Our process

The same sequence is followed on a one-room job and on a hotel floor. Skipping a stage is how finishes fail early.

    Shade matching

    We polish a sample patch on a hidden section of the woodwork and get your approval on the shade before touching the visible surfaces.

  2. 2

    Dust control setup

    Plastic sheeting and taped-off doorways. Sanding wood generates fine dust that travels — containing it matters more in an occupied flat than in a bare one.

  3. 3

    Stripping and sanding

    Old polish removed, dents and joints filled with matching wood filler, then progressive sanding from coarse to fine grit until the surface is smooth to the hand.

  4. 4

    Staining

    Wood stain applied and wiped back to the approved shade. This is where a repaired door is made to disappear into the rest of the woodwork.

  5. 5

    Polish coats

    PU, NC or traditional French polish built up in coats with light sanding between them. French polish on a staircase can run 4–5 days; PU on a set of doors is usually 2–3.

  6. 6

    Curing and inspection

    Surfaces left to harden before use, then checked under natural and artificial light — sheen defects only show under one or the other.

What affects the price

We do not publish a single rate, because two jobs of the same size can differ by a wide margin. These are the factors that actually move the number on a quotation.

Polish type
NC is the most economical, PU costs more, and hand-applied French polish is the most labour-intensive of the three.
Condition of the woodwork
Stripping decades of old polish and filling dents takes far longer than a fresh coat on new wood.
Number of coats and sheen
High-gloss finishes need more coats and more sanding between them than matte.
Surface area and detail
Carved panels, railings and louvred shutters take several times the labour of flat doors per square foot.

Wood Polishing — frequently asked questions

Can you match the polish on new woodwork to my existing doors?
Yes. We polish a sample patch on a hidden area first and adjust the stain until it matches, then get your approval before doing the visible surfaces. Older teak that has darkened over the years can usually be matched closely.
What is the difference between PU, NC and French polish?
PU is the toughest and most water-resistant, best for doors, staircases and dining tables. NC is quicker, cheaper and easier to repair. French polish is a traditional hand-applied finish with a soft depth to it, used mostly on antique and premium furniture — it looks the best and scratches the easiest.
Will there be a lot of dust in my flat?
Sanding does create fine dust, so we seal doorways with plastic sheeting and sheet the surrounding area before starting. Most of the dust stays inside the work zone, but we still recommend covering electronics in adjoining rooms.
How long does polishing a set of doors take?
A standard flat door in PU takes about a day and a half including drying time between coats. Five to six doors and frames together typically run 4–6 days. French polish on a full staircase can take a week.
