How we work

Our process

The same sequence is followed on a one-room job and on a hotel floor. Skipping a stage is how finishes fail early.

    Assessment of the woodwork

    Melamine suits solid wood and veneer where you want the grain visible. On damaged or patched surfaces we will say so and suggest spray polish instead.

  2. 2

    Sanding to bare wood

    Existing coating sanded off and the surface levelled. Melamine is thin and honest — it shows every scratch left underneath it.

  3. 3

    Sealer coat

    Melamine sealer applied and sanded back once dry. The sealer fills the grain and stops the topcoat sinking unevenly.

  4. 4

    Topcoats

    Two topcoats in the agreed sheen — matte, semi-gloss or glossy. Low odour, so an occupied bedroom is usable again the same evening in most cases.

  5. 5

    Curing and handover

    Light use after 24 hours, full hardness in about a week. We ask you to keep heavy objects and water off dining tops for the first few days.

Glossy melamine needs more coats and finer sanding than matte.
Preparation needed
Stripping an old coating back to bare wood is the largest variable on refinishing jobs.

Open-grain woods need extra sealer to fill before topcoats.

Workshop work is faster; on-site work needs sheeting and dust control, which adds time.

Melamine Polish — frequently asked questions

Melamine or PU — which should I choose?
Melamine keeps the wood grain clearly visible and costs less, which suits beds, wardrobes and panelling. PU is harder and more water-resistant, so it is the better choice for dining tables, kitchen shutters and anything that gets wiped down daily.
Is melamine polish safe to use in an occupied bedroom?
Yes. It is low-odour compared with spray finishes, and in most cases the room is usable the same evening. We still keep windows open and advise a night away for anyone with asthma or a very young child in the house.
How long before I can use the furniture normally?
Light use after about 24 hours. Full hardness takes roughly a week — during that period keep water glasses, hot vessels and heavy objects off the finished surfaces.
Can melamine be recoated later without stripping everything?
Yes. Melamine is a repairable finish. A worn tabletop can be scuff-sanded and given fresh topcoats without touching the rest of the piece, which is a real advantage over sprayed finishes.
